As a Sea Kayak Guide from Alberta, I always get a little excited when the snow melts away. This is the time when training for the summer can really pick up.
Recently, I've taken the recommendation of a few other guides and started White Water Kayaking (as I'm a few million years too late for an ocean in Alberta).
Some of the benefits of white water kayaking as a sea kayaker include;
- Maneuverability: With the shorter turning radius of a White Water boat, controlling your direction of travel becomes a prime focus with paddle strokes, edging and posture. The difference between a 16-18ft Sea Kayak and a short 5-6ft creek boat is front row and center, forcing you to become more precise with your paddle strokes.
- Reflexes: With the fast pace of the river, adapting to changing conditions become second nature. The water pushes The tie over to "Rock Gardening" and surge channels is quite incredible,as the river is literally always surging!
- Active Paddling: The concept of always having your paddle in the water can increase your stability. It can become easy to "Paddle paddle paddle, glide" when out sea kayaking. On a river, keeping an "Active Paddle" increases stability, and helps to put you in a mindset ready for the motion of the ocean.
